1. I had a font without Euro and replaced it with the same Linotype font including Euro, but now I am having problems with older documents. What happened?
It could happen that the new font with Euro is incompatible with your old font, even if everything else seems the same. Fonts are constantly updated to meet certain standards and it is possible that the updates made between the old font and that with Euro will cause problems when you replace the old with the new. To avoid this, we recommend that you have Linotype build an Euro into your version of the font. The Linotype Euro money font features a selection of Euro signs for 193 popular fonts of the Linotype. The EuroFont is available at our online store, organized alphabetically A to F, G to P, R to S and T to W, or by contacting our sales department. For information about having Linotype build an Euro into your existing font, please contact info@linotype.com.

2. How do I use the Euro on my keyboard and printer?
PC:
For Windows 95 and some NT environments, you will need the Euro Patch, available from Microsoft via Internet. This patch is already included with Windows 98 and NT Service Pack 4. For keyboard combinations please see the Microsoft FAQ regarding the Euro currency symbol.

Euro Patch Links:
For Windows 95
For Windows NT 3.51
For Windows NT 4.0

Mac:
On a Mac, the combination to access the Euro symbol depending on the OS version, is Option/Alt-Shift-D or Option/Alt-e. This symbol is available only in fonts which come with operating systems 8.5 or higher or with fonts which come with the Euro symbol.

3. How do I type the euro symbol on the different operating systems?
Mac OS to 9.01 = alt shift D
Mac OS 9.04 (update of Mac OS 9.0.1) = alt shift D
Mac OS 9.04 new installation and/or newer = alt E
Windows 98, NT Service Pack and higher, 2000 = Alt Gr+E or Alt+0128

4. Is it possible to exchange documents including the Euro-symbol between Mac and PC without any problems?
For older PostScript and TrueType fontsthis basically does not work. Unfortunately the operating systems have different encoding tables for these fonts. But for newer TrueType fonts and for OpenType fonts it works perfectly.

5. Will there be a euro symbol in Central European layout fonts too? With what limitations? Is there any difference between PS/Mac, PS/PC and TT/Windows?
The euro symbol will not be built into CE layout fonts because this layout has no defined position for the symbol. We can build the euro symbol into the font, but only after defining its position individually with the customer. The customer should consider that with Mac and PC PostScript fonts, another symbol (we suggest the British pound sign or US $ sign) will be replaced. Because we want to make sure we deliver the font you need exactly as you need it, we will only integrate the euro symbol into a font after technical customer consultation with PQM (Process and Quality Management).

6. Is there an guaranteed 100% functioning compatibility to older versions of my typeface?
Based on technical restrictions within the production process of a font and further developments of operation systems, that we are forced to take into consideration unfortunatley we can not ensure a 100% compatibility.

7. I received and installed my new fonts with implemented Euro symbol, but it doesnít seem to be working. Why?
Also operating systems or applications combined with your fonts might have to be prepared and updated to be able to recognize and print out the Euro symbol in the correct way. Further to this also programs for managing PostScript fonts, like the Adobe Type Manager have to be updated. Please ensure especially for PC and MAC PostScript fonts, that you have the latest versions of the Adobe Type Manager which supports the Euro symbol.

8. I would like to have the Euro symbol implented in the font I am mainly working with. Is full technical compatibility guaranteed?
Of course. After the payment the fonts will be delivered directly to you by http download or e-mail. If you have Internet access, it is quick and easy to order fonts from Linotype from anywhere in the world at any time from the Linotype Webshop.

9. Where can I find support for the Euro at operating system level?
Support for the Euro at operating system level is the responsibility of the relevant manufacturer. Apple and Microsoft have each provided support for system upgrades and patches on their home pages.
Windows 98, Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 and upwards all support the Euro at system level. For Windows 95 and Windows NT users, there is a product update available.
For more information about the Euro symbol at system level for PC users follow this link.
For Macintosh users, System 9.x and above supports the Euro symbol.

10. What about known problems with Linotype Euro fonts in applications?
PostScript printer Core Fonts
Core fonts are those that are built into PostScript printers or output devices (i. e. RIP). The printer or PostScript output device will always revert to its core set so even if you have updated to a new Euro font within your system.
A special, “LT renamed” core set can be delivered on request. “Courier LT” is already available in all four weights.
Important:
These fonts do not allow backward compatibility for documents using the previous versions of the core set.

Quark Xpress, Windows and PostScript printers
Quark Xpress (up to version 4.1.x) does not correctly support printing the Euro symbol to PostScript output devices when using Windows. This applies to both TrueType and PostScript fonts.
Other companies have provided practical solutions for this problem, for example JoLauterbach Software GmbH which has created the Euro Patch Xtension.

PostScript Euro fonts and Windows 98
We are aware that when using certain PostScript Euro fonts and Windows 98 that there may be problems when displaying umlauts. If you experience this problem contact our support team (Phone: +49 (0)1805 79 33 39, E-mail: info@linotype.com).

11. Is there anything basically to consider regarding RIPs and printers?
Core fonts – leave the set in the RIP
The original core font set should generally be left in the RIP. We recommend to use the Linotype core set (“LT renamed”) instead of the original core font set or to contact our support team (Phone: +49 (0) 6172 484-418, E-mail: info@linotype.com).

Delete the old fonts in the RIP or ATM (Mac) first
The new encoding tables can lead to the undesired substitutions or lack of symbols if old fonts are still in the cache or RIP. Typical example: the umlauts do not appear in the printout. It could also be necessary to reinstall the Adobe Type Manager.

Use the functions feature of the printer driver
Please check whether your printer driver has the ability to send fonts with the document on the output device you are using. If you have problems with printing Euros, please use this option if it is available to you.

Check that your printer driver with PostScript printers is up to date
Manufacturers of printers often offer current drivers on their websites and sometimes mention whether or not the PostScript printer in question is also able to print Euros. Adobe Systems Inc. also offers on its web page a current standard PostScript printer driver which can use the appropriate PPD file to configure for the printer in use.

Install the current Adobe Type Manger (light)
If you do not use Windows 2000 or Mac OS X, we recommend installing the current version of the Adobe Type Manger. The support of the Euro symbol in PC Version 4.1 and Mac Version 4.6 was decidedly improved over earlier versions.

Deactivate the standard Euro substitution (Windows)
When the font specific Euro can be seen on the monitor but a standard Euro is printed, it is possible that the font specific Euro symbol was automatically replaced with the standard symbol. Windows lets you deactivate this option by using the Adobe PostScript printer driver.
