Nicholas Kis

Nicholas Kis was born in 1650 in the Hungarian Alsómisztótfalu and died 1702 in Kolozsvár. In 1680, he was sent to Holland to participate in the production of a Hungarian Bible. In Amsterdam, he learned die-cutting, font casting and book printing and became one of the best engravers of his time. His teacher was Dirk Voskens. Since 1683, he worked as an independent font founder in Amsterdam. The editions of the Bible set by him were published in the years 1685 to 1687. Two years later he returned to his homeland and reorganized the old printing house of the reformed church in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár).
