More details about Arabic Fonts

Linotype’s involvement with Arabic type design goes one century back. In 1911, Linotype was the first to produce machines for the mechanical typesetting of the Arabic script. Working closely with Arab designers and calligraphers, it launched in the mid 1950’s typefaces like Mrouwa and Yakout. Dubbed as the genre of Simplified Arabic, these typefaces responded to the need for faster and more economical typesetting and helped in the growth of the newspaper industry.

Today, Linotype boasts a number of high quality Arabic typefaces that have proven very popular across the Arab world. Together with leading figures in the industry, Linotype has expanded and updated its font collection according to the latest technology requirements and the growing publishing needs of the Arab world.

Linotype’s fonts support the Arabic, Persian, and Urdu languages as well as Basic Latin. They are in OpenType format, which enables their application on both Mac and PC. This also gives better control over the positioning vocalization marks and the use of a large character set. The fonts also contain several extra features such as proportional numerals, ligatures, and ornaments. Ranging from text to headline fonts, traditional to modern, they offer a wide range of typographic possibilities.
