Morris Fuller Benton – born 30. 11. 1872 in Milwaukee, USA, died 30. 6. 1948 in Morristown, USA – engineer, type designer. After training as a mechanic and engineer, Benton jointed the ATF, where he became type designer and in-house designer with ATF. In 1894, Linn Boyd Benton finished a commission for a new text typeface with the American periodical Century Magazine. Century is typical of the neo-renaissance movement in typography at the end of the 19th century. Morris Fuller Benton drew a number of versions and extensions of Century for the American Typefounders Company, and Century was later taken up by the firms Linotype, Intertype and Monotype. Century is an extremely legible design suitable for almost any text.
