Type before Gutenberg

3 collections of calligraphic typefaces of yesterday for the typographer of today
Using the slogan "Type before Gutenberg" well-known calligraphers had been invited to design historical original handwritten fonts for modern typesetting.

3 collections are now available entitled "Type before Gutenberg" which contain fonts from different ages before Gutenberg.


The fonts from Type before Gutenberg 1:

Duc de Berry™ regular, Duc de Berry™ regular DFR
Duc de Berry from Gottfried Pott is characterized by two major traits: on one hand, the subdued, closed forms of the lower case characters; on the other, the lively lines of the capitals.
These seemingly opposing forces make the tension in Duc de Berry especially appealing. Each individual capital letter could also serve as an initital to add interesting emphasis to modern typography.
Duc de Berry regular DFR contains the DFR layout (Deutsche Fraktur) which includes historic ligatures and a long s.

Herculanum® roman, Herculanum bold, Herculanum outline
These original characters, designed by Adrian Frutiger, sometimes narrow and sometimes expansive, create a very expressive line flow. It is therefore recommended this typeface be used for short copy text. However, Herculanum is also interesting as a headline typeface and it can be used in combination with copy type prevalent today.

Omnia™
The emphasis on handwritten script apparent in Omnia leads to longer line length, it is therefore ideal as a headline face for certificates, diplomas and posters which evoke a ceremonial character. Omnia was designed by Karlgeorg Hoefer.
