SystematicMore weights for more flexibility In the classic Frutiger™ typeface family, which expanded over several decades, the stroke weights increased via mathematical doubling. Hence, the optical contrast between weights, e.g., between Light and Roman, was larger as that between Bold and Ultra Bold. Each Frutiger Next weight has three variants, Regular, Italic, and Condensed. The OpenType family has seven weights, while the PostScript and TrueType versions have six. The weights are no longer mathematically linear. Rather, they are based on the overall optical and aesthetic criteria behind the concept of the typeface. The bold weights are more concise, and the typeface has an individual, not constructed, character. More weights mean more possibilities for use. Frutiger® Next, along with Avenir® Next, Compatil®, Eurostile® Next, Optima® nova, Palatino® nova, Linotype Univers®, Sabon® Next, and Linotype Syntax®, make up Linotype’s Platinum Collection. These fonts were carefully digitized, and have the high quality demanded by professional typography. All fonts in the Platinum Collection were produced according to the Linotype tradition of quality. Linotype and its authorized partners offer these fonts as Platinum Collections CDs or as single fonts or value packs. |
