Arabic script is written from right to left and thus requires complex language support from the Operating System. On the PC platform, the support for OpenType fonts that contain Arabic script specific features started with Windows 2000. The Mac does not support script specific features for Arabic in OpenType fonts. Nevertheless it has Unicode support, the “MacOS Arabic” Codepage therefore is supported. Applications on the Mac platform need to have their own implementation of Arabic feature support. Examples of application programmes that can do this are the Middle Eastern versions of Adobe products etc. Linotype Arabic character sets contain all the appropriate independent and contextual forms, common logotypes, diacritics, and a choice of Arabic or Latin numerals. These typefaces are available in OpenType format. Further information on Arabic typefaces can be obtained here. |
