About Monotype Century™ Font Family ...

Linotype usage sample for
Designer: Linn Boyd Benton / Morris Fuller Benton, 1894-1900
The Monotype Century™ Font Family is part of the Monotype Originals.
The first Century typeface was cut in 1894 by Linn Boyd Benton in conjunction with T. L, DeVinne for Century Magazine. Century was a blacker, more readable face than the types previously used; Monotype Century was created for composition with the Monotype machine and subsequent technologies.

Linn Boyd Benton's son Morris Fuller Benton later designed Century Expanded, as well as other Century variants, from 1900 for the American Type Founders foundry, in order to meet the Typographical Union Standard of the day. The '"expansion" in Century Expanded was along the vertical plane. Century Expanded is a useful font family for text setting in magazines, books, presentations and newsletters.

Century is a trademark of The Monotype Corporation and may be registered in certain jurisdictions.
