Periodico font family
Designed by Eduardo Manso in 2011
Not just for newsprint: the individual and characterful Periódico by Eduardo MansoPeriodico by Eduardo Manso was originally commissioned as a newspaper font. Characteristic features of Spanish typography give it its individual and distinctive feel with the help of which this extensive text font scores highly in other contexts.
One of these historical features that determine the character of Periódico is the unusual form of the bowl of the lowercase “a”, the top arch of which takes up an abrupt diagonal position. This is something that Manso has repeated in the design of other letters, such as the lowercase “g” and “j”.
The serifs decisively determine the character of any Antiqua font. The powerful, geometrically fashioned forms of Periódico are accompanied by a series of unusual line terminals that help vary the style of the typeface. Lowercase letters in particular, such as the “a”, “e” and “j”, have terminals that curve slightly inwards while for the uppercase letters, Manso has chosen to draw on earlier models with outwards curving terminals. These ingeniously employed stylistic elements ensure that Periódico, despite its forceful appearance, retains a dynamic presence. Rounded punctuation marks and the arched outstroke of the “k”, similar to that of an italic letter, emphasise this trait of the typeface.
With its relatively large x-height and open counters, Periódico has been optimised for legibility and for text setting. This requirement has been taken into account in the case of the uppercase numerals that are slightly smaller than the capital letters so that they do not interfere with the reading flow in continuous text. The italic variants of Periódico have been designed as genuine cursives. The less intrusive nature of these dynamically formed letters is predominantly attributable to the drawn-out and curved line terminals to be found on many of the letters. In addition, the “a” is a closed variant while the “f” has been given a descender, with a terminal form reminiscent of that of the upright “j”. Periódico is available in Text and Display versions. While the Text variants include five weights, from Light to Bold, Periódico Display consists of ten carefully graded weights that range from Thin to Ultrablack. In the case of Display, the letters have somewhat finer serifs and are more closely spaced, as appropriate for a display font.
As Periódico was designed specifically as a newspaper font, it is unsurprising that it is perfectly at home in such a context. Its authoritative, clearly legible letters can be used in space-saving text setting and their characteristics are retained even in the particularly difficult environment of newsprint. It is for good reason that this font has been named Periódico – the word is the Spanish for ‘newspaper’. But the individual and distinctive shapes of Periódico can be used with success in other contexts, while the extensive Periódico Display has a similarly wide potential for use.
