"trytype" - Experiments in Typography

A cooperative project between Linotype GmbH, Bad Homburg and the University of Applied Sciences, Wiesbaden. For two semesters under the leadership of Prof. Guido Ludes and Stefanie Weber, Certified Designer, students at the University of Applied Sciences, Wiesbaden experimented with selected typefaces from Linotype. The results of this typographical research are presented in trytype, ranging from linear black-and-white graphics all the way up to complex, three dimensonal font universes, literary interpretations and freehand illustrations. Examples of the didactic steps that led to the creation of the various works are shown and explained in sketches. Not only does this unique combination make trytype a rich source of inspiration, inviting us to view and discover typography in a new light, the book should also be understood as an encouragement to work with characters and typographic systems in ways fully independent of readability.
