About Grunge Value Pack ...

Designer: various, 2005
Grunge Value Pack is part of the Monotype Originals.
Grunge is a state of mind rather than a specific style. Many type designers during the 1990s were enamored with the idea of typographic experimentation, which was an element of the grunge movement in design. The Linotype Grunge Value Pack bundles together five interesting experimental fonts from the late 1990s. All of these fonts are best used in larger display sizes of 18 point and above.

Linotype Compendio is based on the forms of Transitional typefaces from the 18th Century. The outer contours of its letters were purposely made raw and irregular so that they would appear like type printed on low-quality paper. The legibility of Linotype Compendio is thus reduced, making it necessary to use this font only for shorter texts or headlines; it is exactly this characteristic that lends the design its distinctiveness.

Linotype Dropink may remind you of your first attempts with a broad-tipped pen or of schoolwork in days of yore. However, the blots of ink in this case were done on purpose, and are indeed the highlight of the font's design. Linotype Grassy's letterforms were written out with a rubber eraser atop a wooden stylus. Each letter in the typeface sprouts a few blades of "grass," making a line of text resemble an overgrown front lawn.

Linotype Not Painted's forms are made up of multiple layers. The forms of the "uppercase" alphabet, numerals, and punctuation consist of two different styles of the same character superimposed over one another. The "lowercase" letters consist of upper and lowercase forms of same letter superimposed over each other. Linotype Scrap appears as if its forms were cut from pieces of paper with scissors. The letters have are no inner contours or counterforms, only outer silhouettes.
